First Baby Mall

What can I reuse from the first baby?

The short answer

It depends on the piece. Infant seats expire 6 to 9 years after they were made, so check the date first. Several makers say one base takes a range of their carriers. And newer versions of a stroller mostly take the same seats: of the 226 seat fits we can compare across generations, 221 are confirmed on the newer version too.

Pick your first baby's seat and stroller for what their makers say.

What catches parents out

  1. Infant seats expire: 6 to 9 years from the date they were made, depending on the maker

Baby Jogger, Britax, Chicco, Clek and 9 more

    What the maker says
    • Baby Jogger prints the date of manufacture (day, month, year) on the product sticker next to the model number. Baby Jogger product page (archived copy)
    • The date of manufacture is on the seat's serial label. Most models made after 2018 also print the expiration date there. If yours doesn't, add the lifespan given in the manual's Warnings section to the manufacture date. Britax help article
    • Britax car seats generally expire 6 to 10 years after manufacture, depending on the model; check the manual for the exact span. Britax help article
  2. A base from the first baby may not take a newer carrier: 6 makers spell out which base goes with which seat

BOB, Britax, Chicco, Clek and 2 more

    What the maker says
    • The BOB Champ infant seat (sold only in the Wayfinder Pack) can also be installed without its base, using the European belt routing. BOB help article
    • Willow, Willow S, Willow SC and Cypress infant seats all fit the Aspen and Alpine bases, and those two bases take only these seats. Britax help article
    • The Arbor infant seat does not fit Britax ClickTight bases. It comes with its own StayTight base and can also be installed without a base. Britax help article
  3. Older adapters and accessories don't always fit a newer stroller

BOB, Britax, Bugaboo, Clek and 2 more

    What the maker says
    • Older BOB car seat adapters and snack trays do not work on newer strollers that have built-in accessory adapters. BOB help article
    • The Juniper+ car seat adapters only fit the Juniper+ stroller and do not move to other Britax strollers. Britax help article
    • The Fox 5 Renew has its own car seat adapter, listed for the Fox 5 Renew stroller. Bugaboo adapter page
  4. One base often takes several carriers, so an older or spare base may still work

Cybex, Evenflo, Joie, Maxi-Cosi and 2 more

    What the maker says
    • The Aton M and its SafeLock Base are sold as a pair; a spare SafeLock Base helps families with more than one car. Cybex product page
    • A LiteMax infant seat clicks into both the LiteMax and the LiteMax DLX bases, so either one works as a spare base. Evenflo help article
    • Joie sells base AR as a spare base designed for any Joie infant seat, the Mint Latch included (archived Joie page, Sept 2025). Joie product page (archived copy)
  5. A seat that was in a crash may need replacing; makers explain what counts as a minor one

    Maxi-Cosi products, Nuna Pipa (original)

    What the maker says
    • The car seat was in a crash but looks fine. Do I need a new one?: Maxi-Cosi strongly recommends replacing it after any crash. This applies even if your child was not in it and you can't see any damage, because damage inside the shell may not show. Call your insurance company after the accident. Maxi-Cosi help article
    • We had a small fender bender. Do I need a new PIPA?: Nuna points to the NHTSA guideline: a seat does not automatically need replacing after a minor crash. It only counts as minor if all of these are true: the car could be driven away, the door nearest the seat was not damaged, nobody was hurt, the air bags did not go off, and the seat shows no visible damage. Never keep using a seat after a moderate or severe crash. Nuna help article
