What should I check on a used car seat or stroller?

The short answer

Four things, all on the labels or the maker's site: which version it is, when the seat was made and when it expires, whether you can register it for recalls, and whether the warranty still applies (7 brands limit it to the first owner or to authorized sellers).

The checklist is below; pick the seat or stroller for what its maker says.

What catches parents out

  1. 7 brands' warranties stop at the first owner or an authorized seller

Baby Jogger, BOB, Bugaboo, Nuna and 3 more

    What the maker says
    • The warranty does not cover products bought used or second hand, normal wear and tear, or accident, airline or freight damage. Baby Jogger product page (archived copy)
    • The Revolution Flex 3.0 warranty is only for the first owner with proof of purchase; labor and shipping costs are not included. BOB manual (PDF)
    • Only the first owner can claim under the Bugaboo warranty. Bugaboo product page
  2. The made-on and expiry dates are on labels on the seat and the base

Baby Jogger, Britax, Chicco, Clek and 7 more

    What the maker says
    • Baby Jogger prints the date of manufacture (day, month, year) on the product sticker next to the model number. Baby Jogger product page (archived copy)
    • The date of manufacture is on the seat's serial label. Most models made after 2018 also print the expiration date there. If yours doesn't, add the lifespan given in the manual's Warnings section to the manufacture date. Britax help article
    • The KeyFit 30 can be used for 6 years. The "Do Not Use After" date is printed on the maker's label under the seat. Chicco manual (PDF)
  3. Recall notices reach registered owners: 18 makers explain how to register

BOB, Britax, Bugaboo, Chicco and 14 more

    What the maker says
    • BOB asks you to register your stroller at bobgear.com/registration so it can contact you directly about recalls. BOB manual (PDF)
    • The stroller serial number is on the inside of the right swing arm, seen from the back of the opened stroller. BOB manual (PDF)
    • Register a Britax car seat on the online form at csus.britax.com so Britax can reach you in a recall. Strollers have a separate registration form. Britax help article
  4. 14 model lines were sold in several versions, and the versions don't all take the same seats

Britax B-Safe, Bugaboo Butterfly, Bugaboo Fox, Chicco Fit2 and 10 more

    What the maker says
    • Ask how it was used: a seat that was in a crash may need replacing

      Maxi-Cosi products, Nuna Pipa (original)

      What the maker says
      • The car seat was in a crash but looks fine. Do I need a new one?: Maxi-Cosi strongly recommends replacing it after any crash. This applies even if your child was not in it and you can't see any damage, because damage inside the shell may not show. Call your insurance company after the accident. Maxi-Cosi help article
      • We had a small fender bender. Do I need a new PIPA?: Nuna points to the NHTSA guideline: a seat does not automatically need replacing after a minor crash. It only counts as minor if all of these are true: the car could be driven away, the door nearest the seat was not damaged, nobody was hurt, the air bags did not go off, and the seat shows no visible damage. Never keep using a seat after a moderate or severe crash. Nuna help article
