Pick how you're putting it in. Each way is from the maker's manual.
Base with LATCH
Where it can go: Rear-facing only, on a vehicle seat that faces forward (never side- or rear-facing vehicle seats). Never in a seating position with a frontal airbag unless the airbag is turned off. The manual says children are safer in the rear seats than the front. Can be installed on the RELX base or without it using the vehicle belt.
1Swing the base's rigid lower anchor connectors down so they point away from the base.
2Set the base on a forward-facing vehicle seat, with the stability leg released from storage if you are using it (Nuna recommends using it).
3If you like, clip the lower anchor guides onto the vehicle's lower anchors first.
4Grab the connectors and push down and forward until they latch onto the vehicle's lower anchors; the bottom of the base must sit flat on the seat with no gap.
5If there is a gap between the back of the base and the vehicle seat back, push the top or back of the base toward the seat until it clicks into one of its three retracted positions.
6If you are using the stability leg, press its adjustment button and extend the leg straight down until it touches the floor, locks, and its indicator turns green.
Check it before you drive
Pull on the base near the connectors (not at the far end) and check that both connector indicators show green.
If you use the stability leg, its indicator must show green and the leg should be perpendicular to the floor and not slide around; red means it is not firmly on the floor.
If the stability leg lifts the base more than 1 inch off the seat, adjust it to close the gap; never use the leg to recline the base.
The base should be pushed as close to the vehicle seat back as possible, and there should be no gap between the vehicle seat and the bottom of the base.
Some side-to-side movement on the lower anchors can happen and is not unsafe when both connectors are attached.
A gap behind the base is acceptable if the base has clicked through all retracted positions.
Retold from Nuna manual (PDF). Your vehicle's manual also says which seats have LATCH anchors. When in doubt, a certified child passenger safety technician can check your install.
The carrier on and off the base
Clicking it onto the base
1Buckle your child properly into the carrier first.
2Lower the carrier onto the installed PIPA RELX base and listen for the click.
3Pull up on the handle to check it is locked onto the base.
4After any change to the base recline, check the carrier is still attached by pulling up on the handle again.
The maker warns: Always check the carrier-to-base connection. The carrier and its handle must not touch the vehicle interior (door or seat in front) when on the base.
The Pipa RX base: PIPA RELX base: rigid LATCH (4-position) or seat belt, steel stability (load) leg; also installs baseless with vehicle belt.
What Nuna says about its bases and carriers, for a second car or an older base.
Every PIPA infant seat except the PIPA urbn fits both the original PIPA series base and the newer PIPA RELX base. Either base can be bought on its own as a spare. Nuna help article
The PIPA lite, PIPA lite lx and PIPA lite r have to be used with a base. They cannot be installed with the seat belt alone, so for taxis or travel you need to bring the base along. Nuna help article
The newborn insert
What Nuna says about the insert
1Use the head and body supports as needed for a snug fit on a small baby.
2To remove the head support, undo the hook-and-loop ends behind the seat fabric and pull its straps out through the harness slots.
3To remove the body support, unbuckle the harness, take off the crotch pad and route the buckle and crotch strap through the bottom slot of the support.
4Take the body support out once you can get a snug fit without it, at about 11 lb.
The maker warns: The head support straps can't share slots with the harness; use the head support only in the top two harness slot positions.
Rear-facing only, on a vehicle seat that faces forward (never side- or rear-facing vehicle seats). Never in a seating position with a frontal airbag unless the airbag is turned off. The manual says children are safer in the rear seats than the front. Can be installed on the RELX base or without it using the vehicle belt.
