Pick how you're putting it in. Each way is from the maker's manual.
Base with LATCH
Where it can go: Rear-facing only, on a vehicle seat that faces forward (never side- or rear-facing vehicle seats). Never in a seating position with a frontal airbag unless the airbag is turned off. The manual says children are safer in the rear seats than the front. The manual states the seat MUST be installed in a vehicle with the base.
1Park on level ground and set the base on a forward-facing vehicle seat.
2Adjust the base so the bubble in the level indicator touches the line, using the recline adjustment if needed (press the lock button under the base to release it).
3If necessary, fit the rigid lower anchor guides onto the vehicle's lower anchors.
4Rotate the base's rigid lower anchor connectors down and hook them onto the vehicle's lower anchors.
5Optional: for extra stability, unfold the stability leg and press its adjustment button to extend it until it makes firm contact with the floor.
Check it before you drive
Pull on the base and check that the connectors show green.
The base should not move side to side or forward more than 1 inch at the belt path.
The bubble must touch the line; use the recline adjustment if needed.
If you use the stability leg, its indicator must show green; do not use the leg if it lifts the base off the seat, and never use it to recline the base.
Retold from Nuna manual (PDF). Your vehicle's manual also says which seats have LATCH anchors. When in doubt, a certified child passenger safety technician can check your install.
The carrier on and off the base
Clicking it onto the base
1Buckle your child properly into the carrier first.
2Press the carrier down onto the installed base and listen for the click.
3Pull on the carrier to check it is locked on.
The maker warns: Always check the carrier-to-base connection. The carrier and its handle must not touch the vehicle interior (door or seat in front) when on the base.
The Pipa Aire base: PIPA series base: True lock rigid LATCH or seat belt, steel stability (load) leg; also installs baseless with vehicle belt.
What Nuna says about its bases and carriers, for a second car or an older base.
Every PIPA infant seat except the PIPA urbn fits both the original PIPA series base and the newer PIPA RELX base. Either base can be bought on its own as a spare. Nuna help article
The PIPA lite, PIPA lite lx and PIPA lite r have to be used with a base. They cannot be installed with the seat belt alone, so for taxis or travel you need to bring the base along. Nuna help article
The newborn insert
What Nuna says about the insert
1Use the head and body supports as needed for a snug fit on a small baby.
2For smaller babies, the low birth weight pillow sits in the back of the body support; remove it once you can get a snug fit without it (about 11 lb) by opening the hook-and-loop on the back and pulling it out.
3To remove the head support, undo the hook-and-loop ends behind the seat fabric and pull its straps out through the harness slots.
4To remove the body support, unbuckle the harness and route the buckle and crotch strap through the bottom slot of the support.
The maker warns: The head support straps can't share slots with the harness; use the head support only in the top two harness slot positions. The low birth weight pillow must come out once a snug fit is possible without it, at about 11 lb.
