How to install the Evenflo LiteMax 35

Evenflo gives 3 ways to put it in the car, with the base and without it, so a taxi or a second car works without another base.

Steps retold from Evenflo's manual. The manual that came with your seat is the one to follow.

How to install the Evenflo LiteMax 35 in the car

Pick how you're putting it in. Each way is from the maker's manual.

Base with LATCH

Where it can go: Rear-facing only, never forward-facing. Do not use in a front seat with an air bag; the back seat is safest for children 12 and under, and the center rear is generally safest if available. If installed directly behind a front seat, leave at least 1.5 in. (38 mm) between the child restraint and that seat. Only on forward-facing vehicle seats whose backs lock in place. Not with door-mounted belts, belts that move along the frame automatically, lap belts that lock only in a crash (ELR), lap/shoulder belts with two retractors, or inflatable belts. A center install using the inner lower anchor bars of the outer seats is allowed only if the vehicle manual allows it and those bars are 11-20 in. (28-51 cm) apart. Use LATCH or the vehicle belt, never both.

  1. With the car on level ground, take the lower anchor connectors out of their storage and place the base rear-facing on the vehicle seat.
  2. Push the base into the vehicle seat with your full weight and check the level indicator; turn the adjustment knob or set the leveling foot (depending on your model) until the white line is in the color zone for your baby: blue for 4-20 lb, green for 20-35 lb.
  3. Open the lock-off: push down on it while pushing back on the release tab, then lift it up to show the belt path.
  4. Attach the right hook or clip to the right lower anchor bar and the left one to the left bar; pull hard on the strap to be sure each is fully engaged.
  5. Push the base into the seat with your full weight while pulling up on the strap to remove all slack.
  6. Put the extra webbing to the side of the base, not back under the lock-off, and close the lock-off until it clicks; if it will not close, loosen the strap and try again.

Check it before you drive

  • The base must not move more than 1 in. (25 mm) side-to-side or front-to-back at the belt path; if it does, try again or use another seating position.
  • The white indicator line must be in the right color zone for your baby and never in a red zone.
  • If the base is fully adjusted and still not level, put a tightly rolled towel or small blanket under the front edge of the base.

Retold from Evenflo manual (PDF). Your vehicle's manual also says which seats have LATCH anchors. When in doubt, a certified child passenger safety technician can check your install.

The carrier on and off the base

Clicking it onto the base

  1. Set the carrier into the installed base.
  2. Press down on the front and the back of the carrier.
  3. Lift up on the carrier handle to check it is locked firmly in place.
  4. Squeeze both handle releases and move the handle to a travel position (Position 1 or 3 on U.S. models) until it locks.

The maker warns: The carrier must be locked firmly into the base.
