How to install the Cybex Aton G

Cybex gives 4 ways to put it in the car, with the base and without it, so a taxi or a second car works without another base.

Steps retold from Cybex's manual. The manual that came with your seat is the one to follow.

How to install the Cybex Aton G in the car

Pick how you're putting it in. Each way is from the maker's manual.

Base with LATCH

Where it can go: Rear-facing only, on forward-facing vehicle seats in a location the vehicle maker allows; never in vehicle seats that face the rear or side. Never on a front seat with an active airbag.

  1. Turn the base over and pull the LATCH straps out of their storage slots.
  2. With the car on level ground, place the base in an approved seating position and adjust the recline foot to the zone for your child's weight (blue for 4-20 lb, green for 20-35 lb).
  3. Hold the base with one hand, press the button on the belt tensioner handle (without using your thumb) and pull it open.
  4. Extend the LATCH straps fully, flat and untwisted, and push the connectors onto the lower anchor bars on both sides until they click; pull on them to check.
  5. Pull the LATCH adjustment strap while pushing the base into the seat to remove slack, without overtightening, then lay the free end across the belt path.
  6. Press down on the sides of the SafeLock belt tensioner until it clicks and the belt lock indicator turns green.
  7. Click the car seat into the base and lift the handle to check.

Check it before you drive

  • The base should not move more than 1 inch (2.5 cm) at the belt path; if it does, open the tensioner, remove a little more slack, close and recheck, or try another seat or method.
  • If the tensioner will not lock, loosen the LATCH strap slightly and try again.
  • Recheck that the recline indicator is still in the right zone for your child's weight; if not, remove the base, adjust and reinstall.

Retold from Cybex manual (PDF). Your vehicle's manual also says which seats have LATCH anchors. When in doubt, a certified child passenger safety technician can check your install.

The carrier on and off the base

Clicking it onto the base

  1. Make sure the handle is locked in the carry position.
  2. Pick the seat up by the handle and lower it onto the base until you hear a click.
  3. Lift up on the carrier to check it is locked to the base.
  4. Check the recline indicator shows the right zone for your baby's weight.

The maker warns: Only lift by the handle when it is locked in the carry position; any other position could let the baby fall.

The newborn insert

What Cybex says about the insert

  1. The infant insert comes already fitted and gives smaller babies a better harness fit and more support for the body.
  2. Cybex suggests using it until about 3 months or about 11 lb.
  3. When fitted, the insert should sit flush with the buckle.
  4. For a small baby, fold in the insert's side wings for extra support and a better fit.
