Unveiling Yellowstone's Mystery: The Chicago-Sized Bulge (2026)

Yellowstone's Restless Giant: Unveiling the Secrets of a Volcanic Powerhouse

A Chicago-sized bulge beneath Yellowstone National Park has scientists captivated, but is it a sign of impending doom?

The Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem, a geological wonderland, never fails to amaze with its volcanic, geothermal, and hydrothermal wonders. Amidst this natural spectacle, a team of scientists led by Mike Poland, the Yellowstone Volcano Observatory's scientist-in-charge, is closely monitoring a mysterious phenomenon.

A vast area on the northern rim of the Yellowstone Caldera, spanning approximately 19 miles, has been rising since July. This uplift, comparable in size to the city of Chicago, is a captivating yet puzzling event. But don't panic just yet!

Poland clarifies that this underground bulge isn't an immediate precursor to a volcanic eruption. Ground uplift is not uncommon in Yellowstone, with similar occurrences between 1996-2000 and again in 2004 and 2020. Modern technology now allows scientists to track these changes in real-time, creating a detailed map of the growing bulge.

But here's where it gets controversial...

Poland suggests that the uplift is likely caused by the accumulation and withdrawal of magma at a depth of nine miles. However, a 2025 scientific study revealed that Yellowstone's magma chamber has a low percentage of molten material, reducing the likelihood of an eruption. Despite this, the volcano remains active, and molten magma continues to stir beneath the surface.

The question remains: Is this a ticking time bomb or just Yellowstone being Yellowstone?

The year 2025 was relatively quiet by Yellowstone's standards, with only 1,119 earthquakes, which Poland considers 'the very low end of normal.' This is in contrast to the typical range of 1500 to 2500 earthquakes annually. Interestingly, smaller, more frequent earthquakes are preferred over major ones when it comes to active faults, as they help release built-up energy.

Yellowstone's thermal features also made headlines in 2025. A baby-blue pool appeared in the Norris Geyser Basin due to a small hydrothermal explosion, while the Black Diamond Pool, which experienced a larger explosion in 2024, continued to erupt unpredictably. Meanwhile, the Steamboat Geyser, the world's tallest active geyser, seems to be winding down after a period of frequent eruptions.

Poland emphasizes that Yellowstone's unpredictability is part of its allure. The current uplift, earthquakes, and thermal activity are all independent events, and their excitement could be short-lived. The bulge may subside as quickly as it appeared, leaving scientists with more questions than answers.
