If you've been following Unimatic, you’re likely well aware of their relentless stream of fresh variations on their bold, brutalist watch designs. The brand has a knack for producing both eye-catching and understated models that keep collectors eagerly returning for more. Each limited-edition release—typically ranging from 100 to 300 pieces—tends to fly off the shelves, creating excitement for the next unveiling.
Recently, Unimatic unveiled several new iterations of its compact 36mm Modello Cinque U5S series, showcasing a minor yet impactful update: hand-applied, three-dimensional "UNILIGHT" luminous markers. As an owner of various Modello Cinque watches, I can attest that these new markers significantly enhance the dials’ visual depth compared to the previous printed versions. While I anticipate that future models may still feature printed markers, the aesthetic appeal of these new lumed options is undeniable.
Among the recent additions to Unimatic’s "Italian Alps" collection are two mechaquartz-powered Modello Cinques adorned with these UNILIGHT markers on soft blue dials. However, my recent experience revolves around the more luxurious black-dialed U5S-BL limited edition, which is available in either a stainless steel case (as featured in my review) or a sleek DLC-coated black variant. Anyone familiar with the Modello Cinque will recognize the feel and size of this model immediately. With its smaller 36mm diameter, it’s designed to comfortably fit smaller wrists that might find Unimatic’s larger styles cumbersome. The case height is 11.6mm, while the short lug-to-lug distance of just 43.7mm ensures a friendly fit on the wrist.
The real allure of this watch lies in its dial. Those bold blocks of lume rest elegantly against a rich, glossy black background, giving the impression of being suspended in a dark abyss. Although Unimatic describes this as a matte dial, its glossy finish catches the light beautifully, reflecting the hands and markers at various angles. The pronounced rehaut and deeply recessed dial provide an ideal setting for the three-dimensional indices, making them a perfect match.
Surrounding the markers are printed, textured metallic silver outlines that harmonize with a matching seconds track and logo. During my time with the watch, the luminous performance was impressive. However, there was one noticeable issue: the markers and the lume on the hands didn’t quite match in color. The hands exhibited a cooler white hue compared to the warmer tone of the markers, which was somewhat distracting. I hope future models address this inconsistency.
Unimatic presents a variety of 'tiers' across its quartz and mechanical movements, catering to a wide audience with different budgets. The two watches I mentioned earlier are powered by the automatic Sellita SW200-1b caliber and retail for $1,390, while the mechaquartz versions are priced around $700. Each model includes two strap options—an olive drab NATO strap with a seatbelt-style weave and a classic two-piece black leather strap. Personally, I find the olive NATO strap to be exceptional. Not only is it incredibly comfortable due to its plush thickness, but the enhanced lug width complements the 36mm case perfectly.
For those with smaller wrists, the watch is a delight to wear. Interestingly, the continuous design of the NATO strap also makes the compact Modello Cinque more appealing on larger wrists. In either scenario, when paired with the NATO strap, the watch embodies the essence of a refined, contemporary field watch.
In just two weeks since its launch, the 300-piece steel variation of the U5S-BL has completely sold out, while the DLC-coated model remains available. This rapid turnover is surprising, especially since, on paper, these watches may not appear significantly different from earlier models—it is, after all, a black-dial Modello Cinque. Yet, this response indicates a strong ongoing desire for Unimatic’s utilitarian and unmistakably unique style, suggesting that many more exciting iterations are on the horizon.
