A recent study by the International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT) and Fraunhofer ISI has revealed some fascinating insights into the EV market's evolution. A Cheaper Ride
The headline figure is eye-catching: EVs in Germany have become 18% cheaper in real terms between 2020 and 2025. This might seem counterintuitive given the rising average list price of battery-electric cars from around €37,000 to €53,000. But the study's clever analysis, factoring in inflation and vehicle specifications, tells a different story.
What's happening is a shift in the model mix. Mid-range and upper-mid-range EVs now dominate the market, accounting for a staggering 73% of sales. This means that while the overall price tag might seem higher, it's actually a result of more expensive, feature-rich vehicles becoming the norm. Battery Power and Cost

Battery prices have fallen significantly, dropping 21-24% between 2020 and 2025, from €165-185 per kilowatt-hour to €130-140 per kilowatt-hour. Adjusted for inflation, that's a 35-37% decline. But manufacturers haven't fully passed on these savings to consumers.
Instead, they've invested in larger batteries, technical improvements, and research and development. This means there's still room for further price reductions. As Prof. Dr. Patrick Plötz, one of the study's authors, points out, the potential for lower EV prices hasn't been fully realized yet.
Expanding Horizons
The study also reveals a broader expansion in the EV market. The number of battery-electric models has skyrocketed from 38 in 2020 to 159 in 2025, while internal combustion engine models have declined. This growing range of options is crucial for market adoption.
However, there's a catch. The lower-priced market, particularly the mini and compact segments, still lags behind. In 2025, only 19 battery-electric models were available in these segments, compared to 35 internal combustion engine models. This gap needs to be addressed for widespread EV adoption to happen.
Government Support and Incentives
Germany's new EV subsidy, introduced this year, is playing a significant role in shaping purchase costs. Buyers of battery-electric passenger cars can receive up to €6,000 in support, depending on their income and family size. Initial data suggests that models offering a strong price-performance ratio are benefiting the most.
