Samsung’s newest concept aims to stretch your screen without folding—by sliding it open. But here’s where it gets controversial: is slidable tech the future, or just another push for novelty?
But first, the core idea in plain terms. Samsung Display is debuting a “Mobile Slidable” concept at MWC in Barcelona. The design starts with a 5.1-inch display and can extend to 6.7 inches by sliding the panel upward from the top of the device. When you rotate the phone to landscape, the extra display area becomes even longer horizontally, giving you a wider view for video, games, or multitasking.
What’s happening now. The slidable concept is listed as still under development, so there’s no word yet on when or if this technology will appear in a consumer flagship. Samsung has previously shown other expandable-screen ideas, but none have yet reached mainstream production. Thisslide-out approach adds to Samsung’s ongoing exploration of how to increase usable screen real estate without resorting to a foldable hinge.
What the specs tell us. Samsung Display’s documentation for the concept, branded as “Samsung OLED Mobile Slidable,” notes that the panel expands from 5.1 inches (16:9) to 6.7 inches (22:9) when fully extended. The resolution remains Full HD Plus at 1,080 by 2,640 pixels, with a pixel density of about 426 ppi.
A brief history of attempts. This isn’t Samsung’s first foray into slidable or multi-rollable screens. In 2022, the company showcased a multi-rollable prototype called the Flex Slidable, which could extend from both the top and bottom with the press of a button. So far, those concepts haven’t paved the way to a retail device, suggesting there are engineering or market hurdles to overcome.
What people think. The Mobile Slidable concept could appeal to users who want a larger screen without committing to a foldable design. It might particularly attract those who dislike hinge creases or the durability concerns sometimes associated with foldables. On the flip side, critics may question the practicality, durability, and cost of a sliding mechanism versus established foldable options.
