Max Verstappen Invited to Test Drive the Mercedes-AMG GT3: Will He Accept? (2026)

Could Formula 1's reigning champion be taking the wheel of a new Mercedes-AMG beast?

Get ready for some exciting news from the world of motorsport! Max Verstappen, the incredibly talented Formula 1 superstar, has received a rather special 'open invitation' to put the upcoming Mercedes-AMG GT3 racer through its paces. This isn't just any car; it's the next generation of track-dominating machinery from the renowned German performance brand.

The development of this new AMG GT3 racer is in full swing, with a crucial test program slated for the Portimao circuit in southern Portugal next month. This V8-powered machine is set to be based on the recently unveiled Mercedes-AMG GT 63 PRO, a road-going marvel that comes with a hefty price tag of $418,900 in Australia, with deliveries expected later this year. The GT3 racer itself could be gracing the competitive scene as early as the 2027 season, potentially making its debut at the iconic Bathurst 12-Hour race, a traditional curtain-raiser for the sports car calendar.

Before that potential debut, Mercedes-AMG has a packed testing schedule, and that's where Verstappen might get his chance. Christoph Sagemueller, the global head of Mercedes-AMG Motorsport, shared his enthusiasm: "If he is interested, then I am happy." He did, however, add a crucial caveat: "Of course, it depends on his contractual situation."

But here's where it gets a little complex... Sagemueller is alluding to Verstappen's current ties with Red Bull Racing and their new partnership with Ford in Formula 1, which kicks off this year. Interestingly, in the past, when Red Bull had a different F1 engine supplier, Verstappen didn't face any issues racing Ferrari machinery in GT3 sports cars and even established his own team, which is slated to compete with AMG GT3 cars in 2026. This history suggests that while there are contractual considerations, past collaborations haven't entirely barred him from other racing ventures.

While the four-time champion has already had a taste of driving the current AMG GT3 car, Sagemueller clarified that Verstappen won't have any direct input on the development of its successor. "It will be a fantastic car. The development is in full swing," Sagemueller assured, adding, "I would say we are on the schedule." He detailed the initial stages: "We had the first roll-out in August last year. We did two days of testing and it was very good."

And this is the part most people miss: Creating a successor to a highly successful car is a monumental task. "There is still lots to do. The beauty of our current car makes it even more difficult for the successor car," Sagemueller admitted. The primary objective is clear: "The major goal is to bring the car on an even higher level." He acknowledges the challenge, stating, "This, to be fair, is quite a challenge. Everybody is very curious about the next car. We have a high demand for the new car already."

There were some expectations that the new AMG GT3 would be ready for competition this year, and Sagemueller candidly addressed some delays. "We wanted to ensure we had the right concept and bring the car in the right window. That’s why it took longer than originally expected," he explained.

Mercedes-AMG has blossomed into a significant business for the luxury car brand, with ongoing expansion at its headquarters in Affalterbach, Germany. Sagemueller, who was AMG employee #800, now oversees a workforce estimated at 3000, with plans for further growth. "It’s a very big business. We have over 100 active racing teams. We have 48 race weekends a year. Everything we do in racing is linked to AMG."

He elaborated on the strategic importance of motorsport: "We do motorsport for different reasons. Formula One is one of the most powerful branding tools we can get but, when it comes to GT sports and customer racing, is when we are close to the real road car product. This is extremely close to what you can buy for the street."

Sagemueller further emphasized AMG's role in enhancing the prestige of the Mercedes-Benz brand. "We can use the strength of the mother ship and the strength of AMG. We are like the 'speedboat' and it is the big cruise ship. The importance of AMG for the overall Mercedes brand is big." He proudly stated, "I’m operating as a profit centre. That has always been the goal. In the meantime the program has grown so much, so there is more freedom."

Now, over to you! Do you think Max Verstappen should accept Mercedes-AMG's invitation, even with his current F1 commitments? And considering the close ties between GT3 racing and road cars, how much do you believe motorsport directly influences the performance and appeal of everyday vehicles?
